Shaun is Shorn in aid of Axis

One of West Mercia Police’s Student Officers PC Shuan Blackshaw recently shaved his head to raise cash for Axis. Axis ISVA Manager, Becky Jones went to meet PC Blackshaw and his fellow Student Officers, to be presented with the donation of £115.00

Axis are extremely grateful to PC Blackshaw for raising this money for us. Any donations that we receive, or monies that are raised for us through sponsorship events, enable us to provide that little bit extra for our clients.

Turning the Tables on Trauma by Jacqui Wilkinson

A book is being launched today, written by a former client, who was suicidal at 17, due to the abuse she experienced at home.  She came to Axis and as she said, “Axis saved her life!” She is in her 40’s now, and has a successful career in the RAF, working for the NATO and stationed in Italy.

The book about her life and experience, and is giving all of the proceeds to Axis.  Below is the bio below that she has put on Amazon. Also the details of when her book is being launched.

Jacqui has asked that it is shared with as many people as possible, as it will benefit Axis, and the clients who we support now and in the future……

I’m reaching out with a heartfelt request, one that feels both monumental and deeply personal to me.

On Tuesday, 23rd April, my book “Turning the Tables on Trauma” is taking its first steps into the world, and I’m aiming high – I dream of seeing it grace the Amazon bestseller list.

This ask is big for me, as asking for help isn’t always easy. But I’ve learned that sometimes, our greatest strides are made when we lean on each other.

By propelling “Turning the Tables on Trauma” to bestseller status, we’re not just boosting sales numbers – we’re amplifying its message. This book isn’t just mine; it’s a guiding light for survivors worldwide. And here’s the best part: all proceeds, beyond Amazon’s necessary fees, will be donated to Axis Counselling: Supporting Survivors of Sexual Abuse in Shropshire, UK. I do not make a penny selling this book.

* Paperback: £12.99 (vibrant colour photos inside book)

Amazon KDP Description

“The pain of child sexual abuse does not stop when the abuse stops, it long outlives the moment and continues to have damaging repercussions throughout the victim’s life.”

Growing up in a home fraught with physical and emotional turmoil, Jacqui endured the unspeakable anguish of sexual abuse at the hands of her father, compounded by a litany of other Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). At seventeen she attempted suicide and decades later when diagnosed with complex PTSD, Jacqui confronted the haunting pain head-on.

To fill the voids created by the abuse, she became an external super-achiever because her internal self-worth was so badly damaged. Later, Jacqui realised that her relentless pursuit of success was a desperate bid to prove her worth in a world where she felt like an outsider. Despite her outward accolades, she continued to grapple with an enduring sense of inadequacy, haunted by the shadows of self-loathing, doubt and shame.

In Turning the Tables on Trauma, Jacqui peels back the layers of her own trauma with unflinching honesty and vulnerability, sharing her formidable journey as she reached for the stars and achieved the senior rank of Wing Commander in the British Royal Air Force. Yet behind the professional mask of success lay a battlefield of inner turmoil, a constant struggle to reconcile the scars of the past with the demands of the present.

Turning the Tables on Trauma is how one woman chose to overcome the adversity of incestuous and intergenerational familial abuse. Jacqui invites readers into the depths of her soul, exploring the silenced struggles that were suppressed by fear and shame for far too long. Armed with an unwavering commitment to understanding the roots of her trauma, she embarked on a path of self-discovery earning an MSc with distinction as she uncovered the resilience to believe in herself, the courage to enact change, and the power to break the generational cycle of abuse.

Turning the Tables on Trauma is a memoir written by a survivor, for survivors and it serves as a beacon of hope and healing, showing a roadmap for others who have endured child abuse and trauma. Drawing from her own lived experience of survival, years of therapy, and academic research, Jacqui offers invaluable insights and healthy strategies for navigating the journey towards healing and transformation. At its heart lies a powerful message of forgiveness, gratitude, self-love and self-compassion. Turning the Tables on Trauma is a testament to the resolute strength and unwavering faith of the human spirit.

“Remember to self-love and nurture; please don’t berate, and don’t forget to learn to let go of that hate, true happiness will come if you forgive your sad fate, for it is only love and hope that you must now contemplate.”

Feedback – Have your say

Could you help us to improve?

At Axis, we are continually looking to improve what we do, and how we do it. We would like the help of people have used our services, to do that.

A few examples of what taking part might look like, could be:

  • a focus group looking at Axis’ branding,
  • a marketing consultation (this could be anything from looking at a specific marketing campaign, to our organisational marketing strategy)
  • helping us review policies to ensure that they are fit for purpose from the perspective of a client.
  • It may be that we are looking at a new project or service and want to ask specific questions about how we best offer or provide that service.

This list is not exhaustive.

We would like to make our decision-making process more collaborative, so that it involves those who use our services. Instead of doing what we think our clients want, we would rather ask!

If you are interested in becoming involved, please complete the registration form below. Your details will be added to our Client Consultation Register. When we have something that we wish to consult on, we will contact you by email to provide information about the current consultation, and you can opt in, or opt out of that consultation.

You can remove yourself from the register at any time and receive no further contact regarding consultations.

We regret that this opportunity is not currently open to anyone aged 10 and under.

Anyone aged 11-15 will need the support of their parent/ guardian whose details will also need to be provided. We will run separate age-appropriate consultations for Children and Young People.

Rachel’s Peak District 50km Walk in a Day

I’m going to walk 50km in a day for Axis Counselling because of the support they gave me

In 2021 I started a course of counselling aimed at providing me with support in relation to the sexual trauma I have experienced.

Honestly, when I was  offered the appointments after being on a waiting list, I really wasn’t sure I wanted them. I felt like my life had moved on. However I thought to myself, “past me thought this was a good idea, maybe it still is”.

So I took the trauma therapy course, and I am SO grateful I did.

If I could sum up the biggest thing that I learnt, it would be:

That my responses to trauma are natural.

I’m still finding it difficult to say, yep that happened to me, so this admission in itself is quite a big deal.

I’m really hoping that you can understand how amazing it is to have a service available like this, to be completely free.

It would make me so happy if you can and are able to donate.

Independent Accreditation

Axis is very proud to announce that both our ISVA and Counselling Services have been awarded the Independent Accreditation Programme Quality Mark for supporting Male survivors of Sexual abuse from Lime Culture and the Male Survivors Partnership.

We have been supporting Male survivors for almost 3 decades, and working on this accreditation has helped us to review, refresh and improve on what we were already doing, as well as adding new dimensions such as starting focus groups to gain feedback from our male clients, which will help us to inform and improve our services for males.

Our work was appreciated by the Accreditation Team who wrote:

“Following our Group Interview Sessions with your service on 29th November 2021, I am delighted to confirm that Axis Counselling and ISVA service has been awarded the Independent Accreditation Programme ‘Quality Mark’ for achieving the Quality Standards for Services Supporting Male Victims/Survivors of Sexual Violence.

The awarding of the Quality Mark demonstrates the commitment of you and your team to improving the quality of support for male victims/survivors. This is a fantastic achievement for which you should be extremely proud.

Axis Counselling and ISVA service commenced the three year Quality Standards Accreditation Programme in November 2020, and therefore the Quality Mark will expire at the end of November 2023”

Our CEO, Becky Jones said “We incredibly proud to have achieved this accreditation. With 1 in 6 males experiencing sexual abuse in their lifetime, the numbers who seek support are only a fraction of that. I hope that this accreditation will demonstrate to any males who are thinking of seeking our support, that we understand that their needs, and are committed to providing them with the specialist support that they want and need.”

AXIS Supports Denim Day

There is no excuse and never an invitation to rape

For the past 22 years, Peace Over Violence has run an inspiring and powerful opportunity to practice solidarity and support survivors by renewing our commitment to exposing harmful behaviors and attitudes surrounding sexual violence. Denim Day is a campaign in honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The campaign began after a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans she must have helped the person who raped her remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. Peace Over Violence developed the Denim Day campaign in response to this case and the activism surrounding it. Since then, what started as a local campaign to bring awareness to victim blaming and destructive myths that surround sexual violence has grown into a movement. As the longest running sexual violence prevention and education campaign in history, Denim Day asks community members, elected officials, businesses and students to make a social statement with their fashion statement by wearing jeans on this day as a visible means of protest against the misconceptions that surround sexual violence.

Denim Day is April 28, 2021!

The ISVA Service has grown, considerably, over the past 2 years, to ensure that all needs are met for all clients, aged 5 years and upwards who use the Service. The work involved, demonstrating how the needs of the clients are met, and how they are made to feel safe, supported in a non-judgmental environment, which has been undertaken by Becky The ISVA Manager and a dedicated team of ISVAs.

This was appreciated by the team who undertook the Accreditation from Lime Culture, who wrote:

Following our virtual site visit with your service on 3rd September 2020, I am delighted to confirm that Axis Counselling has been awarded the Independent Accreditation Programme ‘Quality Mark’ for achieving the Quality Standards for Independent Sexual Violence Adviser (ISVA) Services.

The awarding of the Quality Mark demonstrates the commitment of you and your team to improving the quality of the support provided by the ISVA service. This is a fantastic achievement for which you should be extremely proud.

We will communicate with you about this in due course.

Dave’s Story

I was brought up in a very loving family and was only slightly aware that others were not so lucky.

As I grew up this awareness increased but it was not until recently that I came to understand how awful a childhood can be.

I met a guy at work who told me of his experiences growing up and how he was abused.  This led to an angry confrontational lifestyle, a downward spiral into fighting, physical injuries, drug abuse and massive psychological scars leading to a number of suicide attempts from the age of 7.

Dave told me a small part of his story after it was suggested he share his experiences by the counsellor he sees.  Dave started attending Axis Counselling four years ago who have made a massive difference to his life.  He now understands his PTSD, its triggers and root causes, and is able to function sociably with the help of the counselling and medication.  He is now also in a loving relationship himself.

Without the counselling Dave doesn’t know if he would be with us today.

After hearing Dave’s story, I resolved to undertake the Isle of Wight Ultra Challenge to raise funds for this charity so that Axis Counselling can help other desperate people who are in the position Dave was or have had even worst experiences.

Axis Counselling supports victims of non-recent (historical) Sexual abuse; any form of sexual assault, sexual violence, sexual exploitation or rape.  They do this for boys or girls over the age of 5.

If you can afford to sponsor me, I can assure you that the money raised will make a big difference in the well-being of some of the most vulnerable people in society.  It will help people understand what has happened to them, that this wasn’t their fault, and give them the ability to cope with their lives and to know that people do care.
